UN/FOLD

A HERITAGE CRAFT RESEARCH INITIATIVE

Our range of Lifestyle Products are all hand-crafted by local artisans from the region of Guizhou in Southern China. We have been working with the villagers for nearly three years to find a way for their traditional textiles to fit within the modern consumer world, in the hope that these heritage craft skills can provide them with a sustainable income and create a new ecosystem that connects the artisans with a wider consumer audience. All the products are co-designed by The Fabrick Lab and the local artisans.
By buying these products you are supporting this ecosystem and the villagers.

TEXTILES

SCARVES

We offer a range of indigo dyed scarves in different sizes. The indigo flora plant used to add dye is grown locally in the village and harvested by the local artisans. The scarves are dyed three times in the home grown organic indigo dye vats. The longer the oxidation process takes, the deeper the colour will be.

Prints are inspired by traditional Guizhou heritage motifs and adapted by both the local artisans and The Fabrick Lab, in collaboration, to create a modern twist. The scarves are finished with a hand rolled edge in the village.

CUSHIONS

Our range of cushions are made from handwoven, shiny cotton textiles. The material is traditionally used for ceremonial garment wear, but we have borrowed their techniques and redesigned it's function and applied it to homeware.

The technique involves treating the cotton with a bean paste, beating, steaming and leaving to dry out in the sun. This is repeated over 100 times and creates a naturally semi water repellent surface.

Our cushions come in a range of 6 designs, with an optional choice of pom poms.

TEXTILE TABLEWARE

Our latest collection of textiles utilises a new technique to the UN/Fold lifestyle collection; soy bean paste resist. Soy bean is native to the Guizhou region and is a sustainable and organic natural resource.

We have utilised its natural properties to create an abstract tableware collection. This includes; tablecloths, table runners, placemats and napkins.

WOODEN HARDWARE

The technique of batik is traditionally used on materials such as cotton for printed clothing designs. We have taken this heritage craft skill and applied it to locally sourced birch from the Guizhou region; broadening the application of the technique. Wood is a living material, this allows the patterns to age into its own character as times goes by.

WALL TILES/ COASTERS

Multipurpose wall tiles are a playful concept. Their modular shape means they can be applied to any surface of your choice so you can create your own personal design.

During the winter months, the colder weather conditions make it challenging for the villagers to produce larger scale textiles in the dye vats. The smaller shape of the wall tiles allows the villagers to continue working through the winter months without sacrificing quality.

STOOLS

Stools hold a valued place within a traditional Chinese village household. It is a symbol of a social culture and celebratory gatherings.

We source both wooden birch materials and expert carpenters from the local region of Guizhou.

WOODEN TABLEWARE

Our latest collection of wooden lifestyle products transforms the batik on wood concept into a range of tableware.

The collection plays off the idea of layering tableware designs to create your own unique settings. The range includes batik  serving trays, plates and serving spoons and forks. You'll find the collection is the perfect partner for our new soy bean paste tableware.
